World Cup Odds: Germany vs. Uruguay for Third Place

Saturday’s World Cup match between Germany and Uruguay is the definition of anti-climactic for both sides as they both lost by just a goal in their semifinal earlier this week. Yet players and coaches on both teams swear there guys will give it their all to call themselves the world’s third-best soccer team. Germany is -135 on Bodog’s World Cup odds while Uruguay is +350 with the total at a rather unusual three goals.
One of Germany’s best players may sit this one out as Miroslav Klose, who is tied for second in this World Cup with four goals and one goal shy of trying Brazilian Ronaldo’s career record of 15 in the World Cup, may miss with a back injury. This will likely be Klose’s final World Cup, so look for him to play as he attempts to get that record. The flu is also having a big affect on the team as captain Philipp Lahm, winger Lukas Podolski and coach Joachim Loew missed training on Friday because of a virus. All three are expected to be there Saturday. And Germany also welcomes back Thomas Mueller (four goals), who missed the 1-0 semifinal loss to Spain due to a red card. Mueller is the favorite to win the Best Young Player Award, given to the best under-21 player at the 2010 World Cup.
Uruguay was the biggest surprise of the semifinals and it gets back one of its stars in Luis Suarez, who missed the 3-2 loss to the Dutch in the semis due to suspension. Fellow star Diego Forlan (four goals) left the loss to the Netherlands with a minor injury but will play Saturday. Captain Diego Lugano will be back at center-back after missing the Dutch match with an injury and left-back Jorge Fucile is available after a suspension last time.
The Germans finished third four years ago when they hosted the tournament, beating Portugal. Certainly this match probably means more to Uruguay as it tries to gain in world soccer status. Germany leads the all-time series 6-1-2. Uruguay’s only victory came in the 1928 Olympics.
