Moreover, this season they go into the final four unbeaten in the competition and with a record-breaking 19th Premier League title practically sewed up.
By comparison, Schalke 04 is making their first appearance in the semi-finals of the UEFA Champions League. Schalke 04 is a solid side that earned its place in Europe’s top-flight competition after finishing runners-up to Bayern Munich last year in Bundesliga. This season has been a different story however; domestic output has been riddled with disappointments and they are wallowing in mid-table obscurity. In spite of those setbacks, they are through to the final four of Europe’s top-flight competition, a run that is underscored impressively with an unbeaten track record at home and that is a testament to the decision to invest entirely into this competition when domestic action was unsalvageable. A tough decision but a decision that very clearly provided dividends when they masterminded a monumental upset over defending champions Inter Milan in the quarters.
On paper alone, it does seem unlikely that Schalke would knock a bother out of Manchester United. Then again, matches aren’t played on paper. The reality is that anything can happen. Not to begrudge Man U a win, but put in the context of Schalke’s impressive home form I don’t think it’ll be as easy as most expect it to be. In fact, I wouldn’t be surprised if Schalke wins or holds Man U to a draw.
