Derek Holland - Texas Rangers Look to Clinch Game 6 of ALCS vs Detroit Tigers

It’s the biggest start of young Max Scherzer’s career on Saturday night in Arlington as he faces the Texas Rangers and Derek Holland in Game 6 of the ALCS, with the Rangers one win from returning to the World Series. Texas opened as a -145 favorite on Bodog Sportsbook's MLB baseball odds.

The Detroit Tigers forced this series back to Texas with a 7-5 win on Thursday night at Comerica Park. After building a five-run cushion, Detroit held on despite Nelson Cruz's record fifth home run of the series. Detroit’s Miguel Cabrera stayed hot, going 1-for-2 with an RBI double that bounced off the third-base bag and over the head of Rangers 3B Adrian Beltre to give Detroit the lead. Cabrera has doubled in four straight games, which is one shy of the record for postseason games. Cabrera has played 12 LCS games in his career and has at least one hit in all of them.

The Rangers go with the lefty Holland. He started Game 2 and didn’t fare well, lasting just 2 2/3 innings, allowing three runs, four hits and walking four. Texas did win, however, 7-3. No Texas starting pitcher has completed more than six innings in any of the Rangers' nine postseason games so far. But the Texas bullpen has been amazing. That group has recorded all three Rangers wins in the ALCS while posting a 1.17 ERA (three runs in 23 innings) and .156 opponents' batting average (12-for-77).

The Texas bats seem to come to life when Holland is on the mound. The Rangers scored 6+ runs in 17 of Holland's starts during the season. They scored at least three runs in 28 of his 32 starts. Holland led the AL in run support this year at a whopping 7.64 per game.

Detroit counters with Scherzer, who has been solid in these playoffs. In Game 2 against Texas, Scherzer allowed two runs in the first. He then blanked Texas from the second through the sixth. At one point, he retired 12 straight. He left after he allowed Cruz's leadoff, tying homer in the seventh.
