NCAA Baskteball Picks and Tips:  Tennessee VS No 6 Duke

First-year Tennessee Volunteers coach Cuonzo Martin is only 841 career wins behind Duke’s Mike Kryzyzewski, now the all-time NCAA leader with 904 victories. Martin can start chipping away when his Volunteers face the No. 6 Blue Duke Blue Devils in the EA Sports Maui Invitational on Monday.

ennessee faces an uphill battle. Duke is 13-0 all-time in the event, having won the tournament title in 1992, 1997, 2001 and 2007. Monday’s winner will face the Michigan-Memphis winner on Tuesday. The Duke-Tennessee series dates back a century and is tied at seven. These teams, which both employ three-guard lineups, haven’t met since a 90-69 Tennessee win in 1980.

Duke Blue Devils (4-0): Five Blue Devils are averaging double figures, led by junior guard Seth Curry (15.8 ppg). Curry, who has hit 10 of 17 from beyond the arc, is joined in the backcourt by freshman Austin Rivers (13.3 ppg) and junior Andre Dawkins (10.3). Junior forward Mason Plumlee is averaging a double-double (12.3 ppg, 10.0 rpg). The Blue Devils are shooting 46.4 percent from beyond the arc.

Tennessee Volunteers (2-0): Sophomore point guard Trae Golden has been unstoppable so far, averaging 23.0 points, 10.0 assists and 4.5 rebounds and having a direct hand in 53.7 percent of Tennessee’s points. Golden hit five 3-pointers in the opener, and Skylar McBee made five of his own against Louisiana-Monroe last Wednesday. The Volunteers turned the ball over only once in the second half of Wednesday’s 85-62 win. As the only senior starter, guard Cameron Tatum is the unquestioned leader and presents a difficult matchup for opponents at 6-foot-7.
