March Madness Odds: Sweet 16 Underdogs with a Victory Shot - Derrick Williams

Just because we’re down to only 16 teams in this year’s NCAA Tournament it doesn’t mean that there aren’t any March Madness underdogs left on which to bet. The NCAA Tournament is one of the best places to find underdogs on the moneyline not just against the spread.

Finding suitable moneyline wagers in any sport is hard to do, but great opportunities exist all the way up to the Final Four when it comes to the NCAA Tournament.  So, I’ve listed out the Top 3 underdogs worth betting on the moneyline in this year’s Sweet 16.  The only team not worth betting on is Kentucky who just doesn’t have the experience to deal with a team like Ohio State in my opinion, but every other team actually has a decent shot on the moneyline to upset the team that they are playing.

I’m only listing and analyzing what I consider to be the 3 best underdogs on which to bet on the moneyline in this year’s Sweet 16.

Sweet 16 March Madness Underdogs

When:  March 24 and March 25

Underdogs worth Betting on the Moneyline

March 24
No. 5 Arizona Wildcats +350 vs. No. 1 Duke Blue Devils
Time:  9:45 pm EST

Analysis:  At this point, 66% of hoops handicappers favor the Arizona Wildcats as one of the March Madness underdogs against the spread versus Duke because the spread is ‘Cats +8 ½ points. Duke will eventually receive more money in the BetUS Sportsbook, raising the point spread on Arizona back to the original +9. Why worry about point spreads? Arizona is more than capable of upsetting Duke straight up because they have a quick player on the blocks in Derrick Williams and guards that can hit the 3 off of screens or drive to the basket. Beating Duke requires beating the Dookie’s awesome man-to-man in one-on-one matchups. ‘Zona can do that.

No. 8 Butler Bulldogs +165 vs. No. 4 Wisconsin Badgers
Time:  9:55 pm EST

Analysis:  The Bulldogs are obviously on an NCAA Tournament roll. They made it all the way to the championship game losing to Duke in 2010. Then, they took down Old Dominion straight up as an underdog and 1 Pittsburgh, arguably the best team in the Big East this past regular season, as a dog. Butler is just one of those terrific NCAA Tournament teams.  They also have a point-guard on their squad, Shelvin Mack that can play straight up with terrific Wisconsin floor general, Jordan Taylor. Mack gives the Bulldogs a shot on the moneyline versus Wisconsin this Thursday night. His NCAA Tournament experience is second to none.

March 25
No. 11 Virginia Commonwealth Rams +160 vs. No. 10 Florida State Seminoles
Time:  9:55 pm EST

Analysis:  VCU vs. FSU should be an excellent game meaning that the Seminoles probably shouldn’t be a 4-point favorite in this contest.  VCU is a seriously talented squad that might be the most likely of the March Madness underdogs to score a victory on the moneyline in the Sweet 16. Point-guard Joey Rodriguez scored 12 and dished 11 assists versus Purdue. Hot Rod scored 17 and dished 7 versus G’Town.  Florida State is talented, no doubt, but they could be running up against the “hotter” team on Friday in the VCU Rams.  The Rams are worth a shot on the moneyline.
