MLB NL Probable Pitching Matchups: Stephen Strasburg Host Marlins

Nationals phenom Stephen Strasburg makes what is likely his second-to-last start of the season on Saturday when his Washington Nationals host Florida MarlinsBet on Marlins-Nationals and every game at Wager Web Sportsbook.

NY Mets at Atlanta – Mets RHP R.A. Dickey (8-12, 3.43) vs. Braves RHP Tim Hudson (14-10, 3.32). Dickey hurled his 10th straight quality start Monday against Washington, but picked up his fourth loss during that span. He gave up two earned runs in seven innings and his seven strikeouts were the most he’s had this year without allowing a walk. Hudson took the loss in his last start against the Cards, which was highlighted by a five-run third inning. The righty has lost three of his past four starts and has a 5.55 ERA in that span. He’s 1-3 with a 5.06 ERA against the Mets this year.

Florida at Washington – Marlins RHP Chris Volstad (5-12, 5.31) vs. Nationals RHP Stephen Strasburg (0-0, 1.13). Volstad last faced the Nationals on Aug. 3 at Washington, and he came out on the winning end of a 6-4 decision. That day, he gave up four runs on seven hits in five innings. He comes off a two-run, seven-hit no-decision in five innings at Atlanta. Making his second start of the season, Strasburg left after pitching three innings in his last outing. In the first inning, Strasburg threw 31 pitches and allowed an RBI single to Carlos Lee.

St. Louis at Philadelphia – Cardinals RHP Jake Westbrook (12-8, 4.61) vs. Phillies RHP Roy Oswalt (7-9, 3.88). Westbrook won his 12th game Sunday against Atlanta, holding the Braves to two runs on five hits over 5.1 innings. Oswalt is searching for consistency to quiet talk of Vance Worley being the better option as the team’s No. 4 postseason starter. He is looking to rebound from an outing in which he allowed five earned runs over seven innings against Houston.

Milwaukee at Cincinnati – Brewers RHP Yovani Gallardo (16-10, 3.66) vs. Reds RHP Edinson Volquez (5-5, 5.80). Gallardo owns a 5.76 ERA in 10 career starts against the Reds and has allowed eight earned runs on 17 hits in 11 innings over two starts this season. In his first start in the big leagues since early July, Volquez made it through five innings and allowed two runs, four hits and four walks. He is trying to finish the 2011 season on a high note as he tries to build some sort of momentum for 2012.

San Francisco at Colorado – Giants LHP Eric Surkamp (2-0, 3.24) vs. Rockies LHP Drew Pomeranz (1-0, 0.00). Despite not recording a strikeout in his most recent outing last Monday against San Diego, Surkamp said that he made a mechanical adjustment that improved his fastball command. Surkamp has allowed just one homer in 16 2/3 innings as a Giant. The player to be named in the Ubaldo Jimenez trade with the Indians, Pomeranz threw five shutout innings in his first career start, a 4-1 victory over the Reds on Monday night. The Giants are dead last in scoring in the National League.

Arizona at San Diego – Diamondbacks RHP Josh Collmenter (9-9, 3.40) vs. Padres LHP Wade LeBlanc (3-5, 5.43). Collmenter was roughed up in his last outing against the Padres at Chase Field. The right-hander allowed six runs on seven hits in lasting just four innings. Prior to that outing, Collmenter had held the Padres scoreless in seven innings this year. LeBlanc won for the first time since Aug. 18 when he allowed four runs on four hits in 5 2/3 innings against these same D-backs in his last start. LeBlanc took a shutout into the sixth inning in that start.

Pittsburgh at LA Dodgers – Pirates RHP James McDonald (9-8, 4.09) vs. Dodgers LHP Ted Lilly (9-14, 4.39). McDonald got into trouble when his rhythm slowed in Sunday’s start against the Marlins. He allowed four runs with two outs in the fifth and never finished the frame. McDonald has allowed more runs in the fifth than in any other inning this year. Lilly hasn’t allowed more than three runs in a game since July. But, as he did in his 5 1/3 innings Monday, he has run into trouble as he approaches the 100-pitch mark.
