Mariners RH Felix Hernandez (13-11, 3.27 ERA) vs. Angels RH Ervin Santana (11-9, 3.27 ERA)
Hernandez has won five of his last seven decisions. He has struck out 28 batters in 23 innings over his last three starts. Hernandez’s solid effort against the Angels last week lowered his career ERA against Los Angeles to 3.85 in 24 career starts. He is 1-1 with a 1.88 ERA in three outings against the Angels this season with an excellent strikeouts-to-walk ratio of 27-to-2 in 24 innings. Erick Aybar is batting just .182 in 44 career at-bats against Hernandez.
Santana gave up three runs and four hits in 6 2/3 innings while beating the Mariners on Sept. 1. He struck out five and walked a season-high seven. Santana is 2-1 with a 2.83 ERA in four starts against Seattle this season and has an 11-5 career mark and 3.69 ERA in 24 starts. Ichiro Suzuki is batting .364 in 77 career at-bats against Santana.
Los Angeles is a season-best 13 games above .500 after Monday’s 7-3 victory. Mark Trumbo furthered his Rookie of the Year candidacy with a homer and three RBIs. Trumbo leads the Angels with 26 homers and 80 RBIs and needs five homers to tie the club rookie home run record set by Tim Salmon in 1993. Aybar singled in the bottom of the eighth to increase his hitting streak to 15 games. Vernon Wells went deep to record the eighth 20-homer season of his career. Maicer Izturis (knee) went 0-for-3 in his action since Sept. 1. Right-handed pitcher Garrett Richards (groin) was activated from the disabled list.
Seattle clinched a losing season with Monday’s loss. The Mariners played sloppy defense by committing a season-high five errors. Ichiro was hitless in five at-bats and needs 40 hits over the final 22 games to reach 200 hits for the 11th straight campaign.
Franklin Gutierrez is done for the season due to the oblique injury he suffered Sunday. Casper Wells (elbow) didn’t play Monday after being hit by a pitch Sunday. Three players will join the Mariners on Tuesday – outfielder Michael Saunders, third baseman Alex Liddi and right-handed reliever Steve Delabar were all recalled from Triple-A Tacoma.
Liddi and Delabar will be the 17th and 18th rookies to play for the Mariners this season. Liddi will also be the first player born and raised in Italy to play in the majors.
