by Frank Martin
The Florida Marlins, coming off a sweep of the defending World Series champion Giants, continue their nine-game, West coast road trip with the first of three against the Los Angeles Dodgers Friday night. Florida has won five of six games to solidify its position as the wild-card leader and is equal in the loss column with NL-East frontrunner Philadelphia.
Los Angeles continues to struggle, with just three victories in its last 12 games and eight in its last 24. The Marlins won two of three earlier this season in Miami and have won seven of the last 10 against the Dodgers.

The Dodgers have opened as 114-moneyline favorites on Bet Online Sportsbook’s Live MLB Baseball Odds.
Marlins RH Javier Vasquez (3-4, 6.41 ERA) vs. Dodgers RH Jon Garland (1-4, 4.75 ERA).
Garland had pitched fairly well for five straight starts before allowing seven runs in 3 2/3 innings against the White Sox in his last appearance. He is 5-1 lifetime against the Marlins with a 2.36 ERA and a .206 batting average against, in 53 1/3 innings against the Marlins. Garland gave up two runs in seven innings in Florida, April 25.
Vasquez pitched seven scoreless innings against the Rays in his last start, with a season-high seven strikeouts for his first victory since April 29. He is 5-6 against the Dodgers lifetime with a 3.92 ERA in 98 2/3 innings
It has not been a pleasant May for the Dodgers, who have scored less than two runs in nine of 23 games. Andre Ethier has struggled since his 30-game hit streak, batting .179, and is currently 2-for-31. Ethier, who ran into the fence in Chicago Sunday and injured his left elbow, lower back and a big toe, pinch hit three times in the recent Houston series and produced two walks and an RBI single. He is expected back in the lineup Friday along with catcher Rod Barajas, who missed three straight with a wrist injury.
Matt Kemp was 4-for-12 in the Houston series with two home runs, but the Dodgers will need more from James Loney (.238).
Florida continues to find ways to win games, getting a five-hit shutout from Anibal Sanchez Thursday afternoon. Mike Stanton leads the Marlins with 11 home runs and also has 28 RBIs and Gaby Sanchez has also come up big with seven homers and 31 RBIs, with a .315 average.
Just think what the Marlins could do if Ramirez started hitting. The All-Star shortstop sat out Thursday with a foot contusion, but is expected back in the lineup for the Dodgers series. Ramirez was 0-for-10 his last three games and is batting .211 with four homers and 17 RBIs, striking out 33 times.
It certainly hasn’t been defense that has caused the Dodgers’ troubles. They have committed just 23 errors in 51 games. Only Tampa Bay and Philadelphia have fewer.
