Jennifer Capriati Nearly Dies Over Drug Overdose

Sad news from the world of tennis – which is in the midst of arguably its biggest tournament of the year at Wimbledon, which you can bet on with Bodog’s tennis odds – as former world No. 1 Jennifer Capriati was rushed to a hospital on Sunday morning after paramedics responded to a call for a drug overdose.
A spokeswoman for Jennifer Capriati says she is recovering from an "accidental overdose" of prescribed medication. The call came from a hotel in Riviera Beach in Florida and the 34-year-old was transported to a nearby hospital, where she remains Monday. Unfortunately drugs aren’t new to Capriati. In May 1994, she was arrested on charges of possession of marijuana after being caught in a Florida hotel room with two drug addicts. She was 18 at the time and then voluntarily entered a drug and alcohol rehabilitation center. In recent years she has suffered from a persistent shoulder injury and admitted to feeling depressed and having suicidal thoughts in a 2007 interview with the New York Daily News. So obviously that makes one wonder if it really was an “accidental” overdose. And why was she at a hotel that was less than a mile from her million-dollar home?
Capriati’s tennis career began as a 13-year-old and really gained international recognition in 1991 at age 15 when she reached the semifinals of Wimbledon after defeating then defending champion Martina Navratilova. But off-the-court issues soon caught up with Capriati and she didn’t play at all in 1995. However, in 1996 she staged a comeback that culminated in a No. 1 world ranking and she captured three Grand Slam titles during 2001 (French and Australian Opens) and 2002 (the Aussie again). She won 14 career titles overall, including those three Slams, and a gold medal at the 1992 Olympics.
