Golf bettors know that the Masters is close at hand, and Tiger Woods, as usual, is the favorite. For the truly elite players, while the tournaments thus far pay out nice money, everything else is prologue. The Masters takes place at Augusta National Golf Club from April 7-10, and as usual, it will be televised on CBS. Tiger is listed at +350 in the golf betting odds for the tournament.

There are other guys who are much "hotter," but when it comes to golf betting on the Masters, it's a totally different ballgame. The Masters is unique among the four major tournaments in that it is played at the same course every year. That course requires certain skills, and let's face it; there are certain players who are better on this course than others.
Odds to win Masters
- Tiger Woods +350
- Phil Mickelson +600
- Lee Westwood +1200
- Martin Kaymer +1200
- Rory McIlroy +1600
- Paul Casey +2000
- Ernie Els +2500
- Dustin Johnson +2500
- Justin Rose +2800
- Ian Poulter +2800
- Graeme McDowell +2500
- Nick Watney +2800
- Anthony Kim +3000
- Padraig Harrington +3000
- Luke Donald +3000
- Jim Furyk +3500
- Matt Kuchar +3500
- Steve Stricker +4000
- Hunter Mahan +4000
- Retief Goosen +4000
Quite obviously, two of those guys are Tiger Woods and Phil Mickelson, and not coincidentally, they check in as the two favorites in this event, as far as the golf betting odds are concerned.
Tiger has won the event four times, but he has not won the Masters since 2002. During that eight-year dry spell, the guy who has demonstrated the ultimate in "Mastery" is Mickelson, who has won the tournament three times in seven years. Lefty is listed at +600 in the golf betting odds. You truly have to keep this guy in mind, regardless of how you think he's playing, because he has been in the top five in eight of the last ten Masters tournaments.
Woods is dangerous here, because even in the years he hasn't won, he has generally done well. He was the low amateur in 1995, winning a trip to the Butler Cabin. After missing the cut in 1996, he has scored eleven top ten finishes in 14 years. In his last five trips to Augusta, he has gone T-3rd (tied for third), T-2, 2nd, T-6 and T-4. Remember, he came back cold in last year's event to snare that top-five finish. So perhaps your money will be well invested at +350 in golf betting.
It stands to reason that if a player has won at Augusta before, he can do it again, as long as he is not woefully out of form or way past his prime. For that very reason, it's worthwhile to take a look at past Masters champions and where they stand on the list in golf betting. Angel Cabrera, who won two years ago, is priced at +8000.
Zach Johnson, the 2007 champion, is a longshot at +6500. He has not done well at Augusta the last couple of years, missing the cut in 2009 and finishing 42nd last year.
Trevor Immelman is basically off the board, despite the fact that he won in 2008. In the last two years, he has finished in the top 20 in the Masters, and did manage to hit the top 30 last week in the Transitions Championship. Mike Weir, who won in 2003, is also off the board at the moment.
Could Vijay Singh be a handful for somebody? The Fiji Islander never had a top ten finish in the Masters until he won the event in 2000, and since then he has hit the top ten five times, though his results have been progressively worse, from a tie for fifth in 2005 to ties for 8th, 13th, 14th and 30th, before missing the cut last year. Singh is priced at +8000 in the golf betting odds.
